The Neretva River flows into the Adriatic Sea near the town of Ploče, shaping a wide and fertile valley over the centuries and forming the largest river delta in Croatia. Today, the Neretva Delta is a protected natural area, home to more than 300 bird species, making it one of the most important ornithological sites in Europe.

Where river and sea come together, the Neretva Delta reveals a unique landscape of wetlands, sandbanks, and open horizons. Watch hundreds of bird species, feel the calm of wide waterways, and experience nature shaped by centuries of flowing water. This is a place to slow down, breathe deeply, and enjoy one of Croatia’s most remarkable natural areas.

The valley is well known for its vast mandarin plantations and is often referred to as “Croatian California.” In recent years, the mouth of the Neretva River has also become one of the most popular kitesurfing destinations in Europe. Thanks to its shallow sandbanks, it is possible to walk hundreds of meters into the sea.

During the time of the Roman Empire, the Neretva River served as a major trading route, connecting Narona, the second-largest Roman city in this part of the Adriatic, with the rest of the Empire. Even today, the riverbed and sands of the Neretva are believed to hide ancient sunken treasures from this remarkable past.
